Whether you are a 10+ year veteran like me or a newbie to the SEO trade, the best place to spend your time is doing the research to find the lowest hanging fruit that will get picked the least. One of the biggest mistakes an SEO analyst can make is jumping straight into executing a project without spending the time to lay a plan of action.
We get about 3-5 new clients monthly that have a product that we have never optimized for search. About half of them want to see results in 30 days no matter how much we explain it is a 3-6 month process. The only way to deliver results in 30 days is to find a few good search phrases that no one is competing over. I usually find at least three good ones that can deliver 10-20 clicks a day. With the Digg Clone Marketing Matrix, I can have the client be number one for all three search phrases in about two weeks. When the pages have the number one spots I give the client a call and ask him to do a google search for each. That process secures at least a six month relationship and keeps them from calling us three times a week.
